Not every change can wait for a routine appointment
Many eye concerns develop gradually, but certain symptoms require same-day or emergency assessment. Delaying care can sometimes put vision at risk. If symptoms are sudden, severe, or rapidly worsening, do not use a website contact form as your first step; contact an emergency eye-care service or visit an emergency department.
1. Sudden loss or darkening of vision
A sudden decrease in vision in one or both eyes can reflect several urgent conditions, including problems with retinal circulation, retinal detachment, or neurologic disease. Even painless vision loss can be an emergency. Do not wait to see whether sleep or eye drops make it disappear.
2. New flashes, a shower of floaters, or a curtain
A few long-standing floaters can be harmless. A sudden burst of floaters, flashing lights, or a shadow moving across the visual field may be a sign of a retinal tear or detachment. These symptoms require prompt dilated evaluation because early treatment can help preserve vision.
3. Severe eye pain with redness or nausea
Intense eye pain accompanied by blurred vision, halos, headache, nausea, or vomiting may occur with acute angle-closure glaucoma or another serious eye problem. It requires urgent evaluation. A painful red eye can also indicate infection or inflammation, so avoid assuming it is ordinary irritation.
4. New double vision or vision change with neurologic symptoms
Sudden double vision, a drooping eyelid, facial weakness, difficulty speaking, or weakness in an arm or leg can signal a neurologic emergency. Call emergency services when vision symptoms occur with signs of stroke or other acute neurologic problems.
5. Significant injury or chemical exposure
A chemical splash, penetrating injury, or major blow to the eye demands urgent attention. With chemical exposure, begin flushing the eye immediately with clean lukewarm water and seek emergency care; do not delay irrigation while searching online. Do not press on an eye that might have been punctured.
Be prepared without being fearful
Knowing these signs helps you distinguish a routine concern from a possible emergency. Keep contact details for an emergency department or urgent ophthalmic service available, particularly if you have known retinal disease or have had eye surgery. When in doubt about a sudden serious symptom, seek prompt professional care.
